PRISM DJs x Rescue Skin Presents: Beyond The Turntables with DJ Lani Love
As we continue to honor and celebrate women's achievements throughout March, we are thrilled to present the next phenomenal woman in our "Beyond the Turntables" campaign in partnership with Rescue Skin.
Meet DJ Lani Love! With an ear for beats and an eye for style, Lani Love commands the scene with her vast and eclectic collection of music across genres and decades.
After working as an internet radio music director in Southern California, she started her journey as a club DJ in New York City in 2007. She relocated to Chicago in 2011 and landed residencies at city hotspots: Soho House, Virgin Hotel, and East Room. Building a following and reputation for her style, she was featured in the Chicago Tribune (2015) and voted Chicago's Best DJ by Chicago Magazine readers for three years in a row (2014, 2015, 2016). In 2018, Lani Love was an official SXSW artist playing showcases for Tidal, Mercedes-Benz, Showtime, and Maltesers.
She currently has DJ residencies in Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
Here's Lani Love, in her own words:
1. When did you start your career as a DJ?
I started DJing in 2007 in NYC
2. What genre of music do you spin?
I'm an open-format DJ, and my taste is super eclectic. House, disco, funk, R&B, hip hop, I love to pull songs from across genres and present them in a cohesive set.
3. What/who inspired you to become a DJ?
MySpace era bloghaus and nightlife. The early days of Diplo, A-Trak, and Flosstradamus. I love how so many DJs were mixing indie dance tunes with Hip Hop, and parties weren't genre specific.
4. When you're not at the turntables, where can we find you?
On my computer prepping for my next DJ stream or tending to work with my DJ crew Club Mesh. We've recently launched merch, so if I'm not at the turntables or my computer, I'm probably on my floor packing orders.
5. When did you start caring for your skin?
Around the age of 30, when I started noticing hyperpigmentation and a change in the texture of my skin.
6. Who was your first skinfluencer? (Whoever taught you how to care for your skin: Mom, sister, aunt, friend, actor, etc.)
Angie, Hot & Flashy on YouTube. I loved that she was a woman in her 50s talking about skincare that she purchased herself vs. a 20-year-old influencer who was gifted a bunch of free products. She also has a methodical approach to testing products and thoroughly documents her skincare journey.
7. What skin product (besides sunscreen) can you not live without? (Toner, moisturizer, serum)
I love a good chemical exfoliator. It not only leaves my skin looking refreshed but also helps my other skincare absorb better.
8. What makeup product is always in your gig bag when DJing an event?
Lipstick. I love a bold lip color!
9. Beauty means many things. What does it mean to you?
It's a mindset. Sometimes I make changes to my appearance to help me feel more beautiful, but ultimately, I feel most beautiful when I feel like I'm fulfilling my purpose.
10. How do you empower others through your work?
I love to share knowledge, whether it's how to start streaming or tips to live more sustainably. You'll see some of this in my Twitch streams and Instagram videos.
