Women's Entrepreneurship Day: Prism DJs Are "First Women" Grant Recipients

From the Founder, Tessa Young:

One of the best parts of my job is that I am surrounded by incredible women to celebrate, and Prism DJs takes every opportunity to do just that. November 19 is Women’s Entrepreneurship Day, giving us another reason to lift the ladies who rock this business.

Women’s Entrepreneurship Day (WED) was founded by Wendy Diamond and was first recognized in 2014. Diamond, who also founded Pet Pioneer, Animal Fair Media, and was an Ellis Island Medal of Honor recipient, wanted to create something uplifting and supporting women in business. This day is celebrated in 144 countries around the globe. It includes an annual event at which The Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Pioneer Awards are presented to women who demonstrate outstanding achievements in areas like sports, technology, philanthropy, and education, to name a few.

WED has also founded and implemented the Global Ambassadorship Initiative and the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Fellows Program to facilitate female business leadership at universities.

Prism DJs is proud to observe Women’s Entrepreneurship Day and honor our women DJs as entrepreneurs- because being a DJ is a business! Being a DJ is so much more than mixing music and performing. Behind the scenes, DJs wear many hats and perform many functions. We have to develop ourselves as an entity: a sole proprietor, an LLC, a corporation, and get a business license and insurance. We are our own administrators and marketers, which means we’re responsible for handling our own inquiries, client communication, invoicing, graphic design, and maintaining a good reputation. And this all happens in the midst of us performing regularly at the events. Women DJs often feel like we are in this business alone, and we often have a lot further to climb to reach success. That’s why it’s so important for women DJs to feel supported and celebrated by a strong community that recognizes our contributions, efforts, achievements, and even sacrifices. Women’s Entrepreneurship Day is for us, my fellow women DJs!

In the spirit of this day, Prism DJs could not be more excited to announce that we are the proud recipients of the Jane Walker IFundWomen Grant. If you’re not familiar with Jane Walker, it is a whisky created by Johnnie Walker to celebrate women, advocate for gender equality, and facilitate “firsts for women.” This grant is part of Jane Walker’s First Women campaign, which seeks to “help create more opportunities for women to achieve their goals.”

Thirty women-owned businesses in the fields of Entertainment and Film, Music, STEM, Sports, Journalism, and Hospitality were selected to receive a $10,000 grant and a one-year Annual Coaching Membership. Prism DJs is among those 30!

With this gift, we will better serve our community of women DJs and empower one another to achieve our dreams. Receiving this grant is a true honor and a very humbling reminder that we can do anything we put our minds to. Our gratitude is boundless, and our motivation is off the charts.

Happy Women’s Entrepreneurship Day!
